Decomposed granite for sale by the bag, the ton, or the yard
Every decomposed granite color above is for sale in whatever quantity your project actually needs. Small repairs and container work go by the 50 lb bag or a sample jar. Pathways, patios and open ground cover are ordered as bulk decomposed granite, priced either per ton or per cubic yard.
The two bulk units are easy to confuse, so it is worth knowing the conversion before you compare prices. A cubic yard of DG weighs roughly 2,700 pounds, which is about 1.35 tons. So a price per yard and a price per ton are not the same number, and a quote that looks cheaper by the yard may not be. Pick a size on any product page and it will show you the current cost for that exact unit, whether that is per bag, per half ton, per ton, or per half cubic yard.
Stabilized DG costs more per ton than non-stabilized because a binder is blended into the material to lock the fines together, which is what gives a pathway its firm, low-maintenance surface. How much decomposed granite do I need?
Measure the length and width of the area, pick a depth, and convert. Most DG pathways and ground cover are installed at 2 to 3 inches. As a planning figure, one cubic yard of decomposed granite covers about 150 square feet at 2 inches deep, or about 100 square feet at 3 inches. Add 5 to 10 percent for compaction and waste, since DG loses volume as it is tamped.
