Lay landscape fabric underneath. Commercial-grade weed barrier keeps soil from migrating up into the rock and stops weeds from finding daylight through it. It also keeps the rock cleaner over time.
2" to 3" is the right depth for ground cover. Less and the soil and fabric show through, more and the rock starts to shift underfoot. A consistent depth reads clean and stays in place.
Edge with steel, stone, or boulders. Loose rock spreads if it has nowhere to stop. Steel landscape edging, concrete bands, or placed boulders all hold the line clean and keep rock out of the lawn.
Rock darkens when wet. Most decorative rock deepens in color after rain or watering, then lightens again as it dries. Mist a sample after delivery to preview the wet look before you commit to the whole yard.

What's the difference between landscape rock and gravel?

The two words describe size, not a different stone. Landscape rock is the larger, more decorative material, chosen for beds, accents and dry creek beds where color and shape carry the design. Landscape gravel is the smaller, more uniform crushed or screened material used for paths, driveways and broad ground cover. How much landscape rock do I need?

Does landscape rock need to be replaced over time?

How deep should landscape rock be?

For decorative ground cover, 2 to 3 inches is the sweet spot. It fully covers the soil and fabric without shifting underfoot. Dry creek channels and drainage areas can go deeper, and larger cobble naturally sits a bit thicker. Keep the depth consistent for a clean, finished surface.
