Santa Barbara Sandstone is the stone behind the walls and building veneer at the high end hotels, resorts and estates of Hope Ranch, Montecito and Santa Barbara. It features gold, tan and brown with some chocolate tones, and as rock goes it is soft, which is precisely why skilled masons can chisel and work it into finished wall and building stone.
It is also a reclaimed material, recovered as a by product of routine foothill construction and flood channel cleanup rather than cut from a dedicated quarry. One distinction worth knowing when comparing quotes: most sandstone sold in Southern California comes from the Ventura County mountains and is called Malibu Rock, which carries a high amount of pale green sandstone. That green rarely occurs here. Available in 12 to 18 inch and 24 to 30 inch grades, sold by the ton.
